Hippocrates (460-370 BC) was one of the first to realise what many now recognise—that cow's milk can cause gastrointestinal distress. Now, growing numbers of health experts are starting to catch wind of the link between consumption of dairy products and excess gas in cheese and milk consumers. An estimated 5 million people in the UK suffer from lactose intolerance, a condition that can cause gas, nausea, cramps, bloating and diarrhoea.

Lactose intolerance has no gender or race barriers—adults and children, men and women, Caucasians and Asians—people from all walks of life can suffer symptoms after consuming dairy products. In fact, the British Nutrition Foundation reports that 75 percent of the world's population is lactose intolerant, with some black and Asiatic communities being almost 100 percent lactose intolerant.

Untold numbers of people who haven't been diagnosed as "lactose intolerant" routinely choose antacids for "dessert" after indulging in cheese pizzas or double-tall lattes. A better alternative would be to give the bottle the boot—and go for soya alternatives!
